Pride & Prose
About this event
A book club dedicated to queer stories, queer authors and queer themes.
This October at Pride and Prose, we’re reading Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse by Anne Carson. A retelling of the myth of Geryon, the winged red monster who is slain by Herakles, the book reimagines him as a sensitive, red-winged boy who keeps an autobiography and falls painfully in love with Herakles. Part ancient myth, part coming-of-age story, part meditation on desire, memory, and the act of seeing, it follows Geryon from a difficult childhood into the hurt and wonder of first love and its aftermath. It’s strange, lyrical, and fiercely tender, a queer classic that makes room for ache, awe, and the odd beauty of being a monster in a world that doesn’t know what to do with you.
For this session, we will be reading a few passages from the book together, and reflecting on some observations as we go.
